URGENT: 3 bills that need your support TODAY BEFORE 3PM!

Please join us in supporting the following three bills, all of which will be heard by House committees this afternoon at 3:00p, by contacting committee members with a quick email or text.

  • ENVIRONMENT: HB29 S03: Energy Efficient Vehicle Tax Credit Amendments (Rep. Handy) – This clean air bill extends Utah’s existing energy vehicle tax credits (which expired Dec. 31, 2016) through 2021 and makes the credit assignable at the point of purchase, allowing purchasers to assign the tax credit to a financing entity. Millions of dollars will be invested in EV infrastructure over the coming few years, yet electric vehicles represent only 0.4% of Utah’s total passenger vehicles bought between 2011 and 2016. HB29 S03 is aimed at accelerating adoption of electric vehicles to improve air quality in Utah.
  • HEALTH: HB 71: Hygiene Tax Amendments (Sen. Duckworth) – This bill removes a tax on feminine hygiene products. 11 states have eliminated sales tax on feminine hygiene products and in the past year more have attempted it. Most states don’t tax prescription drugs or medical supplies and the argument is that tampons/pads are a comparable need; also, women don’t have a choice about whether to have a period and penalizing their need for hygiene products is unjust.
  • VOTER RIGHTS: HB 159: Amendments to Voter Registration (Rep. Handy) – Utah has consistently scored near the bottom in voter participation in recent years. We can help change that! HB 159 aims to make registration easier and improve voter participation by making voter registration automatic when people get a Utah driver’s license. The changes proposed in HB 159 are supported by the Association of County Election Clerks and the Lieutenant Governor’s Elections Office.

HB29 S03: Energy Efficient Vehicle Tax Credit Amendments (Rep. Handy)

Hearing: House Revenue and Taxation Committee – Wednesday, Feb 8th, 3:00pm (Agenda item #3), 445 State Capitol

Email the committee with subject header: “Yes on HB29 S03: Energy Efficient Vehicle Tax Credit Amendments”

You can say something like this (please personalize): I’m a constituent of (ZIP or District) writing in support of HB29: Energy Efficient Vehicle Tax Credit Amendments. HB29 S03 is an important incentive to increase adoption of electric vehicles in Utah, to make use of millions of dollars of EV infrastructure already in place and getting built out over the next few years and to help tackle our significant and costly air quality problems in Utah. Please support clean air by supporting HB29 S03 today.”

HB 71: Hygiene Tax Amendments
Hearing: House Revenue and Taxation Committee – Wednesday, Feb 8th, 3:00pm (Agenda item #6), 445 State Capitol

Email the committee with subject header: “Please support HB 71: Hygiene Tax Amendments”

You can write something like this (please personalize): I’m a constituent of (ZIP or District) writing in support of HB71: Hygiene Tax Act. Utah doesn’t currently tax disposable home medical supplies, and feminine hygiene products should fall within a similar scope of products. While this tax generates revenue, it’s an unfair burden based on sex. This tax also uniquely disadvantages low-income women who frequently lack access to feminine hygiene products. Similarly, the providers which serve low-income women should be able to order them tax-free as a medical supply. Please approve HB71 in Committee and allow it to be heard by the full house to include more women in the discussion.”

  1. Representative Steve Eliason is on the committee for HB29, but he’s also sponsoring the current substitution of the bill. We probably don’t need to email him! He’s very much on board. 🙂
