No family should be taxed into poverty. That’s why Rep. John Westwood (R-Cedar City) is running a great bill, HB 57: Utah Intergenerational Poverty Work and Self-Sufficiency Tax Credit to strengthen Utah’s groundbreaking IGP initiative with a state Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) for IGP families who work, qualify for federal EITC and file their state taxes that supports progress toward financial stability and independence.
A state Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) would help Utah families keep more of what they earn so they can stay employed and meet their basic needs. In the 29 states that already have a state EITC program, the data shows that this extra financial help benefits working families by increasing work, reducing dependence on other social safety net programs and increasing self-sufficiency. But this great bill needs our help to pass!
HB 57 passed in the House with a 41 to 32 vote. Now it is headed to the Senate, where your voice could help it cross the finish line. Please take a moment to email your state Senator now!
