The GOP and Trump Administration have worked hard to rush Trump’s cabinet picks through confirmations without allowing the Office of Government Ethics to complete their review of the nominations for conflicts of interest. Senate Democrats pushed for a delay of Betsy DeVos’ Senate confirmation vote after her first hearing and called for a second hearing once her paperwork had finally been completed. They were granted a one week delay, but denied a second hearing to question DeVos on the paperwork around her finances and potential conflicts of interest revealed only after her hearing.
Despite what even Senate Republicans admit was a poor showing at her first hearing, in which she demonstrated a lack of understanding about education concepts and suggested guns should be allowed in school to protect children from grizzly bears, DeVos is slated for her confirmation hearing on Tuesday, January 31st.
