BAD BILL ALERT!
HCR 12: Concurrent Resolution Urging Federal Legislation to Reduce or Modify the Boundaries of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (Rep. Noel) would recommend to Trump’s administration to dramatically reduce the size of the monument in order to allow for coal extraction and other such activities on the land. Legislators pushed this resolution through the state legislature, including breaking the rules in the House to do so, despite the fact that a majority of Utahns favor the National Monument. Legislators cite economic downturn for towns near Escalante as one reason for the reduction, despite the fact that Garfield and Kane counties have both experienced population, job and income growth as a result of the monument’s designation.
The Utah legislature’s actions passing HCR 12 and also HCR 11 on Bears Ears has caused Outdoor Retailers to reconsider whether Utah is the best place for outdoor business and to potentially withdraw their annual convention from the state, citing the state’s apparent antipathy toward stewardship of the land and disregard for the lucrative outdoor industry. Patagonia has already bowed out due to Governor Herber’s decision to back HCR 11 to rescind Bears Ears NM. Governor Herbert acquiesced to pressure from the outdoor industry and has agreed to meet with OR over Bears Ears this week.
Let’s keep the pressure on! Although HCR 12 has passed through the House and Senate, it still needs to be signed by Governor Herbert to become law. That means we have one last chance to stop it.
