Fair voting districts are vital to our system of representative governance. Did you know that right now, the Utah state legislature draws not only the boundaries for their own districts, but for our federal districts as well? Democracy is not well-served by allowing politicians to pick their voters, rather than voters picking their politicians. The majority of Utahns (65%) favor putting redistricting in the hands of an independent commission.
Utah Redistricting Ballot Initiative
An upcoming ballot initiative aims to do just this and put the concept of an independent redistricting commission directly to Utah voters on the 2018 ballot. In order to get the initiative on the ballot, a whopping 100,000 signatures from Utah voters need to be gathered. That means lots of people around the state collecting signatures… and getting paid to do it.
