Did you know that there is currently NO protection for Utah workers who experience discrimination or harassment in their workplace if they work for businesses with under 15 employees? HB 283: Workplace Protections Amendments by Rep. Becky Edwards (R-N.Salt Lake) would change that. Equalizing protections for all workers in businesses big and small is good policy that has been shown to reduce cases of discrimination in other states and reflects Utah values by broadening protections to everyone.
This important bill is headed to the House Business and Labor Committee THIS AFTERNOON!
Besides writing to committee members, one of the best ways to show your support is to show up for the committee hearing TODAY. The House Business and Labor Committee meets from 4-6p in Room 445 of the State Capitol Building (map). HB 283 is last on the agenda, so it will be heard at the end (though please be aware that there is a possibility that it could get pushed to the next meeting due to time constraints or be heard as late as 7:30p — in other words, no need to come until later in the hearing). Warm bodies in the room show the committee that the public cares about this bill. Please email us if you plan to attend.
All Utahns deserve to work in a safe environment free from harassment and discrimination.
