SB 171 Intervention Amendments allows the legislature to intervene in any court case that may challenge laws passed by the legislature. This is a duty currently performed exclusively by the state attorney general within the executive branch. It also comes with a price tag of $700,000 to hire additional attorneys and staff to do a job the executive branch is already doing.
Governor Herbert vetoed SB 171 on Tuesday because it tips the balance of power out of the executive branch and into the legislative branch. But Speaker Hughes has responded by stating that he “would hope” legislators will overturn the veto. Let’s not let that happen!
