Demand action on Russia

Last week’s highly controversial press conference in Helsinki with Trump and Putin was met with unprecedented criticism by American politicians. Top Republicans, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, Senate President Mitch McConnell, Sen. John McCain, Sen. Marco Rubio, Sen. Bob Corker and Newt Gingrich, blasted Trump for cow-towing to Putin and distrusting our intelligence community — some even going so far as to call the president’s behavior “shameful” and “disgraceful”.

In Utah, every member of our Congressional delegation, along with all our congressional candidates, issued statements defending our intelligence community and calling for Russia to be held accountable for meddling in the 2016 election. Yet no actions have been taken to shore up our democracy from ongoing and future attacks or to hold Russia accountable.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

  • Call your two senators and one U.S. rep and ask what actions they plan to take to safeguard our democracy and elections from Russian meddling, starting with the 2018 election? How will they hold Russia accountable for attempts to undermine our democracy and destabilize our country? What concrete actions will they take to secure critical alliances with NATO and the European Union?

What can be done?

Some legislators have contemplated passing a resolution declaring that Russia is not our friend, but Congress has proven that merely passing a resolution will not persuade the White House to take a different course. More must be done. Some legislators are calling for imposition of stronger sanctions on Russia or subpoenaing Trump aides to testify and explain Trump’s behavior.

Mormon Women for Ethical Government published this list of possible actions in the Salt Lake Tribune last week. Whether or not you are a member of MWEG, you may forward this letter to your members of congress and ask specifically which actions will they take.
