“Freedom of the press is one of the greatest bulwarks of liberty, and can never be restrained but by despotic governments.”
– George Mason
Regardless of how you may feel about Donald Trump’s policies, his administration’s ongoing and increasing attacks on the press have drawn sharp criticism around the world for threatening America’s democratic values, belittling the role of watchdogs that protect our democracy and bolsters dictators in other countries while endangering journalists there.
Last week Human Rights experts at the United Nations strongly denounced Trump’s treatment of journalists. David Kaye, the UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression and Edison Lanza, the IACHR Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression issued a joint statement in which they warned that “these attacks run counter to the country’s obligations to respect press freedom and international human rights law.”
The Boston Globe called on newspapers across the country to allow their opinion columnists to weigh in collectively today, rising as a unified voice in defense of journalism.
Protecting the free press protects our democracy and the lives of journalists in other countries.
