Save lives for Suicide Prevention Month

September 4th, 2018|Action of the Week|1 Comment

September is Suicide Prevention Month.

Utah has one of the highest suicide rates in the nation. Suicide is the 5th leading cause of death in Utah and the top cause of death for kids age 10-17. There is one suicide death in Utah every 14 hours, and 12 Utahns are treated for suicide attempts every day.

That’s why suicide prevention is a top priority among Utahns and right here at Action Utah.

Our team is working on proven suicide prevention policies that need your support for the upcoming State Legislative Session. We’re also spreading information about things you can do in the meantime to help prevent suicides in your community. Refer back to these actions all month, and PLEASE SHARE THEM with others!

WHAT YOU CAN DO

  1. Check out these great actions you can take to learn about effective suicide prevention, share stories of hope, and empower everyone to be there for those in distress, brought to you by the Suicide Prevention Resource Center. Pick one or two actions that you can take!
  2. Participate in one of these two events this month for suicide prevention and recognition.
  3. Click here to watch the KSL Special “Breaking the Silence on Suicide”
  4. Spread the word about these suicide prevention resources by sharing them with friends, family and your social network.

Another important suicide prevention measure is to encourage all gun owners to be responsible with their weapons and store them safely at all times. If a family member is going through at rough time, they should seriously consider storing their weapons outside the home until that time has passed. Means matter. Putting distance between suicidal family members and lethal means saves lives!
