LAST CHANCE – Protect immigrant families!

December 7th, 2018|Action of the Day|0 Comments

A newly proposed rule by the Department of Homeland Security drastically changes the long standing bipartisan immigration policy that helps determine eligibility for green cards and admission to the U.S. This proposed change targets tax-paying, legal immigrant households by allowing government officials to consider the use of an applicant’s broad range of services, such as Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and housing assistance, when determining eligibility for green cards and/or lawful admission to the U.S..

Approximately 1 in 4 children (18 million) live in a family with at least one immigrant parent, and children of immigrants are the fastest-growing group of American children. The majority of children of immigrants live in a household where both parents are working but are employed in lower-paying jobs that don’t provide enough income for them to meet their families’ needs. Holding the legal use of benefits against immigrants in the green card process threatens the economic security of immigrant families and the health and wellbeing of their children.

Before the rule can be finalized, the administration is required to review and respond to every single unique comment. The comment period is open until MONDAY DECEMBER 10TH.

  • The administration’s heartless changes to the “public charge” rule would send the message that people who are older, people with disabilities, and people with pre-existing conditions are not welcome in America.
  • The Trump administration’s rule change is a matter of life and death— threatening the health of millions who receive critical care through programs like Medicaid.
  • Trump’s unfair public charge regulation would dismiss people with disabilities and with pre-existing conditions, cutting them off from programs and services they need while creating a system that heavily favors the wealthy.
