The 115th Congress is soon to close up shop and make way for the 116th Congress beginning in January. But there’s still so much for Congress to do and only a few days to do it!
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Call on your members of Congress today to pass these good bills that strengthen women and families:
- Preventing Maternal Deaths Act, H.R. 1318
- The Maternal Health Accountability Act, S. 1112
At issue: Deaths related to childbirth and pregnancy are rising in the United States, and are especially high among Black women. The Maternal Health Accountability Act and the Preventing Maternal Deaths Act (S. 1112 and H.R. 1318) would help reduce the number of deaths and severe complications from childbirth by allowing for the review of cases to enable health systems to address the factors.
- Fairness for Breastfeeding Mothers Act, S. 2122
- Supporting Working Moms Act, H.R. 3255
At issue: Many moms want to breastfeed, but discomfort of breastfeeding in public and the lack of lack of break time and a private place to pump in the workplace are some of the main barriers that keep many women, particularly women of color, from meeting their breastfeeding goals.
Currently, federal law requires employers for most hourly wage-earning and some salaried employees (nonexempt workers) to provide reasonable break time and a private, non-bathroom location to express breast milk for one year after the child’s birth. This is a great first step, but it leaves millions of workers without any protections at all.
The Supporting Working Moms Act and the Fairness for Breastfeeding Mothers Act would help close the gap in the law and expand protections for all breastfeeding mothers who work outside of the home.
