Nearly all Utahns agree that we must increase per pupil spending, but no approaches have moved forward in the state legislature. Despite Governor Herbert’s requests, per pupil spending has still not passed pre-recession levels and once again, ranks the lowest in the country. At the same time, Utah is experiencing a teacher shortage largely fueled by low teacher pay.
While many advocates, including Action Utah, asked for the Teacher and Student Success Act funds to increase the state’s weighted pupil unit (WPU), funds were instead given to schools with no accountability about how they will reach students.
State legislators have the power to increase the WPA in the 2020 legislative session. Most legislators will say they support education funding when asked but few have policies in mind that would directly increase WPU and support Utah children. Ask them to prioritize this decision-making before the next school year.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
- Write to your state senator and state representative to say that Utah must increase the weighted pupil unit (WPU) in the 2020 session and ask them what their solutions are to do so. Ask them to prioritize this decision-making before the next school year. School may be out for summer, but now is an important time to begin thinking about solutions for Utah kids. Let’s make sure we provide needed support for our schools!
