On Friday, Vice President Pence visited detention centers in McAllen, Texas to find the appalling conditions of “a system that was overwhelmed.” Utah’s Sen. Mike Lee attended the visit with Pence, seeing (and smelling) for himself what the conditions are like in McAllen. Over the weekend, political parties jockeyed to point fingers and defend the system. Meanwhile, thousands of migrants remain in detention centers across the border where basic human needs are not being met.
This year, Utah’s House of Representatives passed HR3: House Resolution Supporting Humane Response to Refugee Crises calling for compassion for the plight of refugees, humane response to the crises at the U.S.-Mexico border, affirmation of the rights of families and an end to family separations. A copy of HR 3 was sent to the Utah congressional delegation, the President of the United States, the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and Governor Herbert.
Weeks later, a group of religious, civic and business leaders came together to reaffirm the decade-old Utah Compact, a document originally intended to cool bitter immigration debates by emphasizing humane treatment of immigrants, keeping families together and focusing deportation on serious criminals.
Now it is time for constituents to remind our congressional leaders of Utahns’ desire for our country to create a humane response to the humanitarian crisis at the border.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
- Call on Sen. Mike Lee, Sen. Mitt Romney and your congressional representative to push for a humane response to the refugee crisis at the border now. Remind members of congress about Utah’s HR 3 and Utah Compact. Ask them what they plan to do to improve the treatment of migrants at the border immediately.
