As we all know, Utah is a conservative state and one that values conservation in the style of Teddy Roosevelt. According to the Utah Foundation, water supply and quality is a top priority for our state, and Utahns agree about 2 to 1 that the state should focus on water conservation efforts over the construction of new water infrastructure. Envision Utah’s major 2017 Water Strategy Recommendations report lists water conservation as their number 1 recommendation.
Indeed, conservation strategies in other states have saved millions of dollars for taxpayers by delaying the need for new water infrastructure by many decades and producing water savings of 2% to 25% annually in other Western states.
Utah is the second driest state in the nation with one of the highest rates of municipal water use per capita – by far. Yet, Governor Herbert recently announced a new goal of reducing Utah’s municipal water use by only 0.5% per year from 2019-2060.
Action Utah is one of over 50 organizations who are leading the way on water conservation by signing on to a new campaign asking Governor Herbert to reduce municipal water use by 2% per year – an achievable goal that would save our state huge amounts of water and taxpayer resources. You too can support this campaign to get better water conservation in Utah!

About the “Save 2% For Utah” campaign
Save 2% for Utah is a newly launched campaign asking Governor Herbert to reduce municipal water use by 2% per year, instead of the proposed 0.5%. A community of 50+ businesses have stepped forward to make water conservation a priority as our state continues to grow. As the highest per person water users in the second driest state in the Union, Utah is at a critical time in water conservation. By forming a coalition of businesses and citizens, we want to let our state government know that it is time for us to get real about water.
At the heart of the campaign is a letter to Governor Herbert stating why the current water saving goals should be replaced with a statewide goal of 2% municipal water use reduction per year. A coalition of businesses has signed this letter, making it clear that water conservation is a top priority in our community.
