Today is National Voter Registration Day, a national holiday celebrating our democracy by ensuring that everyone who is eligible has the opportunity to vote.
In 1980, Utah ranked 5th nationally in voter turnout, but in 2016 the state ranked only 39th. Low voter turnout in Utah has been the trend (2018 turnout aside, as high polling numbers were attributed in large part to special circumstances of items on that ballot). In addition, women’s voter registration could use a boost, with an estimated 288,000 women in Utah who are citizens but unregistered to vote (2016 U.S. Census).
