On Utah ballots, voters may indicate a straight-ticket vote for a particular political party. However, straight-ticket voting can cause significant issues and voter confusion. A good bipartisan bill, HB 70 Repeal of Single-Mark Straight Ticket Voting, would remove the straight-ticket option on the ballot in order to eliminate this confusion and help to ensure voters get their votes counted on each item on the ballot they choose to vote on.
HB 70 would not prohibit a voter from voting for all candidates from a single party, but it would improve the likelihood that a ballot cast would accurately reflect the voter’s wishes.
