Following the events in Salt Lake City over the weekend, we, like a lot of you, are at a loss for words. This has been a difficult week for Utah, and the pain and fear we are feeling at this time are valid. We condemn racism and racist policies.
We care about all Utahns and feel that it is important to specifically say that black lives matter. It’s essential to elevate the voices of those who have been marginalized through sustained discriminatory and racist policies. To fulfill that goal, it is crucial for all of us to understand the context under which we see violence unfolding. A critical first step is fully acknowledging the pain and violence that is disproportionately affecting black people.
We recognize that this is a time in our history for Action Utah to listen and learn about how to show up for communities of color through our policy and civic engagement work. Our work is incomplete without representing all Utahns in this manner.
Moving forward, we will provide resources and actions that have been recommended to us by community experts to help empower Utahns to impact this issue. This week, we’ll be sharing and taking actions every day to help us reflect, understand, and support changes to eliminate systemic racism.
