Utah is experiencing an acceleration period of COVID-19 infections. Many infectious disease experts are attributing this to opening up the economy before we saw the recommended decline in cases. As positive cases continue to go up, it is unlikely that Utah will shut down again, for fear of further economic turmoil. However, our state is now at high risk of overwhelming our hospitals at our current rate of transmission.
In an effort to combat the virus, some hospitals and physician groups are supporting the “Mask Up” campaign to encourage mask use in public places where social distancing isn’t possible. The business communities are encouraging the governor to make a statewide mask mandate in order to reduce friction with consumers at businesses that are already requiring masks for entry.
Along with social distancing and good hand hygiene, mask wearing is one of the best options in the toolbox for combating the spread of this illness. In fact, a review of 172 studies shows that the use of face masks could result in a large reduction in risk of infection. Some governors in red states, including Texas, are creating mandates for mask wearing in their hardest hit counties. In Utah, not only are businesses requesting a mandate, but public health officials are strongly urging it.
